Wildcreek Reimagined: A History of Change
Wildcreek Golf Course, the new home for First Tee-Northern Nevada, has a rich history that dates to its opening in 1978. Originally designed by Brad Benz and Dick Phelps, the par-3 course and 18-hole course were developed and managed by the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority. Wildcreek was a go-to public course for locals and golf tourists alike and hosted PGA Senior Tour events for 3 consecutive years (1983-1985).
More recently, Wildcreek Golf Course has been the subject of notable change and renovation. Procter R Hug High School opened August of 2022 on the grounds of Wildcreek Golf Course leaving only 7 holes of the 18-hole course. In 2022 Washoe County transferred the ownership of Wildcreek to First Tee-Northern Nevada and First Tee broke ground on the Wildcreek Project in January of 2024.
The Wildcreek transformation provided a much-needed permanent home for First Tee, removing many constraints and enabling expanded programming to serve more kids. Brian Curley with Curley Golf Design designed a new championship 9-hole course and refurbished the existing 9-hole par-3 course with both nestled within the beautiful Wildcreek’s topography; a mix of willowed wetlands and lakes that ascend into unique rock formations of the former Wedekind Mining District. The course’s lowlands were formerly a part of John Capurro’s dairy farm, and the Orr Ditch (1875) still winds its way on the western side of the course to the Spanish Springs Valley.
Future phases of this transformation will include a 1.5 acre putting green, a new state-of-the-art short game area, a year-round multi-level driving range with a new golf shop and large retail store, a new First Tee learning center, and a full-service restaurant and bar.
